What You Can Expect
After you get dropped off at the tour’s starting point, your guide will give you brief safety instructions and rules. Then, hop inside your dune buggy and get ready to start the adventure of a lifetime! The buggies boast original VW engines and a 4-speed stick-shift transmission, and they thus have tremendous speed and agility! The dune buggies seat up to four people, and you have the option of sharing a buggy with a new friend or hiring a private buggy.
As you head out into the Dominican countryside, you’ll pass charming and brightly colored Caribbean houses along the way. Your first stop will be at a shop for some real Dominican coffee, which is known for its rich aroma and full body. It will also help keep your energy level high for the rest of the drive!
You will then follow the nature path, passing palm trees and banana plantations along the way. You may also see and hear birds. You will then reach an authentic limestone mine. Limestone has long been a popular building material throughout the world. Afterwards, you will drive on a paved road to the villages of La Caiba and Macao. There you’ll stop at a local colmado (grocery store), where the local people from the countryside do their daily shopping. You will find such staples of Dominican cuisine as plantain, batata and yuca. The colmado also offers drinks and snacks which you can enjoy before driving to Macao Beach, one of the last natural beaches in the Dominican Republic.
You will drive along the white sand and enjoy spectacular views of the beach and ocean. Finally, if there’s time, you can stop for a quick swim in the ocean before driving back to Punta Cana. The whole trip lasts about four hours, and the explorers drive about 55 miles.
